The introduction paragraph of your essay is one of the most important sections of your composition. Ideally, it should accomplish at least 3 objectives:
Foreshadow the rest of your essay
Generate interest in your topic
Provide a bridge into the body of your writing
The question is: How do you write an awesome introduction paragraph? Here are 3 main steps to follow:
1. Create a Hook
The first sentence of your introduction paragraph should clearly convey the subject of the whole essay and clue your readers in to the main idea of your composition. You also want your hook to pique the interest of the readers.
There are many ways to accomplish the above-mentioned goals. For example, you can restate the prompt in your own words, ask a question or make a simple statement about the topic.
2. State Your 3 Topics
Once you’ve finished writing your topic sentence, you’ll need to expand on the scope of your essay by providing further details. This is the “meat” of your introduction paragraph.
You want to be careful that you don’t give away too much about your essay in these sentences. Instead, you may want to briefly mention the main points that you will cover in your paper.
3. Craft a Closing Sentence
Finally, you’ll need to write a closing sentence with two main objectives in mind: first of all, to wrap up the introduction paragraph and your initial discussion of the main topic; and secondly, to smoothly transition into the body of your essay.
