Two Tips to Make Writing Fun
Writing may not come naturally to many students; however, there are many ways to make writing fun - such as incorporating games into the curriculum. Here are two tips that may help:
"Race Against the Clock"
"Race Against the Clock" is a fun game that can get your students more interested in writing. To play this game, you will time your students in each section of composing an essay. If the student finishes writing that part of the essay in the allotted time and writes it correctly, he or she will receive a raffle ticket. For example, start with the planning stage. Give your students 15 minutes to map out their outlines. Once they are finished, have them raise their hands. Check their work and give a raffle ticket to each student that followed the proper rules of planning. Repeat this for each section of the essay. At the end of the game, raffle off one or more prizes. It's simple, fun, and will engage your students in the writing process.
"Word Search" is another fun exercise that is very similar to "Race Against the Clock" in that it involves raffle tickets. Instead of students trying to finish their work within a specific time frame, they must use certain words within their essays. For each word (or two or three words) that the student uses within the composition, the student receives a raffle ticket. How do you set the word list for the essay? Select the topic for the student essay. Then, find or create a word search puzzle that contains vocabulary related to the topic. Give this puzzle to your students as a preliminary exercise. Once they find all the words, they'll know which ones they have to use within the essay. At the end of the game, raffle off one or more prizes. It's simple, fun, and will engage your students in the writing process.
